THE HOT PINK PEN

Focus on Women Filmmakers

THE HOT PINK PEN is an advocate for women directors & screenwriters, creative filmmakers who are generally overlooked by the mainstream media. Even when their work is noticed, however, it's often misunderstood &/or rudely demeaned. THE HOT PINK PEN is now here to right these wrongs, & help women (& men) in audiences everywhere find wonderful films by women filmmakers.

BookTV did an interview with my good friend Louise W. Knight (aka “Lucy”) when they came to Chicago last weekend to attend our annual Printers Row Lit Fest!

You can watch the full 13 minute interview HERE (scroll down to 5th program & click on Lucy’s picture).  Click HERE to pre-order her new book JANE ADDAMS: Spirit in Action (to be published by Norton in September 6th—Jane Addams’ 150th birthday).  Click HERE to read the selections from CITIZEN: Jane Addams and the Struggle for Democracy (Lucy’s first book about the first half of Jane Addams’ extraordinary life).

Last but not least, click HERE to learn more about Jane Addams Day, celebrated annually in Illinois on December 10th (the day Jane Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize).

HUGE Thanks from Jan

To all who sent birthday greetings yesterday by eMail or Snail Mail or Facebook &/or Phone! And special thanks to those of you who went the extra mile by making contributions to WITASWAN!!!

I got RB up ~ 6:30 AM to watch Obama in Oslo & then dashed, dashed, dashed until almost 11 PM, packing in a wonderful lunch @ American Girl Place with wonderful friends (also joined, of course, by ”Rebecca Rubin“) plus a performance of the new Addams Family musical (on it’s way to Broadway soon).

As you can see from photo, everywhere I went, my Mom went too.  Did she know when she gave birth to me on 12/10/51 that it was “Nobel Prize Day” & “International Human Rights Day,” & one day in the future, also “Jane Addams Day” in Illinois?  Maybe, maybe not, but I’m guessing she knew way before I did that someday all these “coincidences” would add up to a personal agenda.

Way to go, Helene!

I just finished listening to President Obama’s Nobel Address on CNN & in my opinion it’s the best speech he’s ever given.  Somewhere in Nobel Heaven, Jane Addams is looking down on her homeboy with great pride right now.  No, he did not mention her by name (lucky for me because, if he had, my heart might have stopped beating), but from the years of research I have done on her life & work, I sincerely doubt Jane Addams would have disagreed with much in his message (especially the part where he said: “true peace is not just freedom from fear, but freedom from want”).

So, wherever you are when you read this post, please join me in celebrating Jane Addams Day today & everyday!  To President Obama: Bravo!!  And to Chicago, my adopted home: You’re not just “the second city,” you are the breeding ground of giants!!!

PS: The invitation to speak at the College of Complexes came from Program Coordinator Charles Paidock who met me under the IWPA canopy at this year’s Printers Row Book Fair J

Once again this year, AAUW-Illinois displayed a multitude of books about Jane Addams (for adults & kids) in preparation for the 3rd annual Jane Addams Day (celebrated in Illinois every December 10—the day Jane Addams became the first American woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize). New WITASWAN flyers & SWAN Day buttons & magnets were also distributed by the hands-ful!

3/7/08: Decatur Public Library

Decatur Public Library Presentation

Before heading back to Chicago, I did a second screening of DINNER AT JANE’S at the Decatur Public Library.  This was the first time (to my knowledge) that anyone passed out evaluation forms, but the citizens of Decatur were extremely kind to me, giving me a 4.9 rating (out of 5).  Some of the comments were as follows:

“This was fantastic! Best program I’ve attended. Loved it!”

“Please keep bringing such wonderful programs. Thank you.”

“A dynamic speaker, interesting topic, VERY appropriate for Women’s History month!”

     THANK YOU TOO, DECATUR!!!
