Ilya & Emilia Kabakov: Enter Here

Fascinating visual portrait of Russian-Jewish artist Ilya Kabakov & his wife/collaborator Emilia. I was totally unfamiliar with Kabakov’s work & it’s mesmerizing.

Filmmaker Amei Wallach tells the story of his difficult life in Russia (& the heroic sacrifices Kabakov’s mother made to keep him in art school) as her camera lingers over all the tiny details of his now world-famous installations. (JLH: 4/5)

Q: Does this film pass the Bechdel Test? Well filmmaker Amei Wallach does interview Emilia Kabakov & while they’re mostly talking about Ilya Kabakov, they’re talking about his work & his overall influence on the art world. Also even tho she (Wallach) is never see on screen, she’s omnipresent. So I give this a yes, but it’s a stretch & you are free to disagree in the “Comments” section below 🙂
