Seen at the 4th annual Athena Film Festival at Barnard College.
Pratibha Parmar’s well-assembled BioDoc Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth was made for the PBS series “American Masters,” ensuring Parmar terrific access to all the essential people in Walker’s world-historic life.
Best-known as the author of the controversial Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Color Purple, Walker grew up in rural Georgia & lived thru all the key moments of the Civil Rights Movement.

Q: Does Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth pass the Bechdel Test? Yes!
Altho Parmar discusses crucial elements of Walker’s life with many of her interview subjects including Walker herself, the focus is always on her work. Therefore we do learn a great deal about her romantic entanglements (ex-husband, former lovers), but that is a small part of the total story.
Surely when Parmar is interviewing key members of the cast of Steven Spielberg Oscar-nominated adaptation of The Color Purple (including Oprah Winfrey & Whoopi Goldberg), all they care about is how to bring her poetic words to life!
