When you wish upon a star, be careful what you wish for. Or as Meryl Streep said to Robert Redford in Out of Africa: “When the Gods want to punish you, they answer your prayers.”
When I moved to Brooklyn in the Fall of 2012, I made a personal commitment to review ALL films opening in NYC either written &/or directed by a woman filmmaker. To accomplish this, I go to critics screenings, and get DVD screeners &/or streaming links from publicists. As a last resort, I do “the Friday Runaround” to cover anything new that has otherwise slipped through the cracks. Most weeks, there are 3 or 4 new films by women filmmakers, and I’ve usually seen them all by Saturday AM (when the weekend starts for most of you).
But this past Friday (6/6/14), NINE films either written &/or directed by a woman filmmakers opened in NYC! NINE!!!
Don’t believe me? Here’s the list:
- Burning Blue
- Citizen Koch
- Dormant Beauty
- The Moment
- Obvious Child
- The Only Real Game
- Small Small Thing
- Supermensch
- Walking the Camino
It took me until yesterday to see eight of them, and I am still missing one (Dormant Beauty) which I plan to see ASAP.
Of these eight films, do any pass the Bechdel Test? Yes!!! And here’s the list:
- The Moment
- Obvious Child
- Small Small Thing
- Walking the Camino
It’s like I keep saying folks: The films are there; what’s missing is the audience…
