Director Wilson Yip and screenwriters Tai-Li Chan, Lai-yin Leung, and Edmond Wong have created the third chapter of the Ip Man series, paying tribute to master martial artist and teacher Yip Man. Like the other Ip Man movies, the third is heavy on action and speed. A number of high-stakes subplots concern the future of the city’s school and the rightful master teacher of Wing Chun fighting. With tender family moments of “Ip Man” (Donnie Yen) and his wife “Cheung Wing-Sing” (Lynn Hung) dealing with their growing son and Wing-Sing’s illness, the movie has an element of family epic.
Donnie Yen as “Ip Man” is, as always, a dignified hero for the set of Ip Man stories. He is an unparalleled fighter, but also an example of graciousness and self-control. Other star appearances include boxing champion Mike Tyson as a villainous big business developer and stunt master Jin Zhang as Ip Man’s quietly formidable rival. (AEL: 3.5/5)
